Half Day or Full Day : The Temples of Abu Simbel, situated 240 kms south of Aswan, are the mightiest temples of Ramses II and dedicated to Ramses himself as well as to his Chief Wife Nefetari, whose beautiful tomb is in Luxor's Valley of the Queens. They were re-positioned on higher ground, stone by stone, when the New High Dam was built, creating Lake Nasser. If they had not been re-positioned, these incredible colossal monuments would have been completely submerged by the waters of Lake Nasser and lost forever. The project to move these vast temples gained world-wide attention, and the 5 year operation, which cost 9,000,000 US dollars, was completed in 1968. Today, when visiting the temples of Abu Simbel, the visitor also has the opportunity to visit the dome behind the temples, and learn how the operation to move these temples was carried out. This remarkable feat of engineering pales when compared to the task which the Ancient Egyptians must have faced, in building such a monument but without the aid of our sophisticated modern-day technology. The temples of Abu Simbel can be visited by air or by road. Elegant Voyage will be pleased to adjust timings according to clients needs, however, please note that duration of the tours can vary according to outside factors such as traffic, high volumes of tourists on the sites, etc.
