Alexandria “The Pearl of the Mediterranean” Alexander’s own city, founded to immortalize the best aspects of his pan-Hellenic ideals, stands today, a tribute to both past and present. Once the cultural hub of the Mediterranean area, the city today teems with the vitality of each of its sister ports on the sea. Its museums and ancient monuments stand out in witness of that intellectual and cultural capital, for Alexandria, not only held the Lighthouse of the Seven Wonders of the World, but was a lighthouse to mankind itself. Bibliotheca Alexandrina: Replacing the old library which was destroyed during Roman time, Bibliotheca Alexandrina was rebuilt in October 2002; its inauguration was a worldwide celebration. It includes 3 museums, a planetarium and 3 libraries. Kom El Dekka: considered the only relic of a roman Odeon (small theater) in Egypt. The Roman Amphitheater is located just behind. Pompey’s Pillar: constructed in honor of the Emperor Diocletian and originally from the temple of Serapis. The Catacombs of Kom El-Shoqafa: The Christian cemetery is a blend of Pharaonic and Roman art on three levels. The National Museum: A fascinating record of civilization covering the period from the 3rd Century B.C. to the 7th Century A.D. The Royal Jewelry Museum: set in Zizinia, one of Alexandria districts. This museum holds a magnificent collection of jewelry almost all collected by Mohammed Ali and his descendents as well as valuable statues and paintings. The Mosque of El-Mursi Abu El-Abbas: The city’s biggest mosque, built in an Andalusian style. Qait Bay Fort: is Alexandria landmark and Alexandria’s ancient light-house; located on the northern tip of the Eastern Harbor. It was built in 1480 by Mamluk Sultan Qaitbay. Montazah Palace & Gardens: Located on a high hill overlooking the most beautiful beach of Alexandria, this is the palace from which King Farouk left Egypt after the revolution of 1952. Marsa Matruh: Located 290 km west of Alexandria, this place is very famous for its beach extending over 7 Km with its fine white sand and clear transparent water; it is protected by a chain of natural rocky breakwaters extending in the sea parallel to the beach; among the most beautiful beaches there: Al-Gharam (Love) beach, Rommel Beach, Obayed Beach and Agiba Beach. Some touristic sites in Matruh: Cleopatra’s Bath: a rock hewn whirlpool bath offshore used by Cleopatra and Anthony as legend says.Rommel’s Museum and beach: A cave where General Rommel used to plan his military campaigns. El Alamein: War Museum: a good collection of uniforms and materials of countries involved in the battle of El Alamein. Commonwealth war cemetery, German and Italian war memorials would complete the visit.
