The Suez Canal was created to shorten the trade route between Europe in the West and the exotic East. It took 10 years to complete, it’s official opening being in 1869. Ismail, the sovereign remembered for his involvement in the canal project. Today, Ismailia is one of the most pleasant of Egyptian cities, reminiscent of turn-of-the-century charm with its cool, tree-lined boulevards. The city also has it’s own museum and visitors can enjoy the gardens of Ismailia which border the Crocodile Lake.
